What is flower drying?

Flower drying is the process of preserving fresh flowers so that they maintain their shape and often their color. It’s an ideal way to give bouquets a second life and use them for decoration or creative projects.

Unique methods and materials

Roobos guides you through seven proven methods for drying flowers:

Air drying
Ideal for roses, lavender, and hydrangeas.

  • Select fresh, undamaged flowers

  • Remove excess leaves

  • Tie small bunches with string or elastic

  • Hang upside down in a dry, dark, well-ventilated area

  • Leave for 1–3 weeks depending on type and humidity

  • Optional: fix with hairspray

Flower pressing
Perfect for violets, daisies, and flat flowers.

  • Choose flat, strong-petaled flowers

  • Place between blotting or baking paper

  • Press with heavy books or a flower press

  • Replace paper daily for the first 5 days

  • Leave to press for 2–4 weeks

Silica gel Great for delicate flowers like ranunculus or violets.

  • Choose well-shaped flowers

  • Fill airtight container with a silica gel base

  • Place flowers upright and cover gently

  • Seal container and leave for 5–7 days

  • Remove carefully with tweezers

Glycerine treatment
Best for eucalyptus and sturdy flowers.

  • Mix 1 part glycerine with 2 parts warm water

  • Cut stems diagonally and submerge

  • Place in cool, dark area for 1–2 weeks

  • Let drain and use in arrangements

Epoxy resin
For decorative pieces and preservation.

  • Fully dry flowers first

  • Place in silicone mold

  • Pour thin epoxy layer, add flowers

  • Cover completely with more epoxy

  • Remove air bubbles, cure for 24–72 hrs

Hairspray fixative
Temporary method.

  • Air dry first

  • Hold upright in ventilated space

  • Spray lightly from 30 cm

  • Let dry completely, repeat if needed

Combination method
E.g., air dry + hairspray or press + frame.

  • Dry thoroughly using one method

  • Follow up with another for protection
